What is a packaged unit?

In terms of HVAC and heating units, a packaged unit is an “all-in-one” heating a cooling system for your home. They are great for those who lack the necessary space indoors for all the features they need, like a furnace and coil, or an air handler. All the parts associated with a packaged unit either sit on the roof or next to the side of the building.

What size packaged unit do I need for my home?

Depending on the size of the building you are attempting to heat or cool, packaged units come in different sizes. The larger unit has more BTU/tonnage and is ideal for larger buildings. While the smaller unit has less BTU/tonnage and is usually easier to install. Both will need to be installed on a slab for stability and security. The same sizing calculations that are used for traditional air conditioner systems will also work for packaged AC units but you will some efficiency depending on how far outside the building the unit is placed. It is always best to use the highest insulation ducting possible for packaged units.

What type of packaged unit suits my home best?

Dual-Fuel System: A great option if you live somewhere that sees regular, low temperatures. A duel-fuel system works by turning on the gas when it gets too cold, meaning you’ll use less gas throughout the remainder of the year, saving you money.

Packaged Heat Pump: A great solution for those in the southern US where temperatures rarely drop below freezing. These units contain a heat pump and an air handler, and use all-electric heating and cooling.

Package Air Conditioners: Though the name implies one function, a package air conditioner can be made to heat by adding heat strips, perfect for those who are looking for an all-electric option.

Packaged Gas/Electric Systems: A gas packaged air condition is used for home that have available gas heating as a option. These type of systems are perfect for people who want a gas only option for heating.

The type of heat source that you use depends on many variables including the type of technology that you want to use, how eco-friendly you want it to be, what types of fuel are available in your area and which are the most affordable. Many things can be taken into consideration but one main thing to consider is if it is a new installation or a replacement system. For the simplest installation, you will want to the same type of heating source that was previously installed.
