Air Condition Unit

Should you get an air condition unit that cools just one room or the entire home or office? It all depends on your needs. If you share a room with someone, for example, a window unit is best so you can manage and monitor your own utility bill.

Keeping Cool

In any event, keeping your home or room cool for the hot summer months is essential, whether you use central air or a window A/C. All you want is to ensure that the heat does not overwhelm you and whatever air conditioner unit you are using, it is energy efficient and works out to be affordable. When air circulates in a small room or large room, the key is that there is no loss of air or you will end up having a higher than usual energy bill. This is true whether you are using a large or small air condition unit.

The Voltage

Make sure that your air conditioner is emitting 7.5 amps in electricity for a small room. Plug it in a circuit of no more than 115-voltage. However, the same circuit cannot be shared with other large appliances. For larger rooms, the air conditioning unit should emit in excess of 7.5 amps in electricity with its own circuit of 230-voltage.

Operating at High Efficiency

The efficiency of an air condition unit is measured by its EER, which is the ratio of energy efficiency. This ratio measures the capacity of which the room or home is being cooled. The measurement is in BTU, which is the thermal units used per hour and the watts, which is the power input. When the rating of the EER is higher, it operates more efficiently. Therefore, if you are considering an air conditioner for a room in your home, office or apartment, make sure it has the label marked “ENERGY STAR.” This dictates whether the unit is going to be more energy efficient or not.

The Size

To have your room cooled to the right capacity, you will have to consider the size of the actual room that you want to cool. The cooling capacity for a room ranges from 5,500 BTU to 14,000 for each hour of use. It is important to have the appropriate sized air condition unit. The larger unit is not essentially the better one. Why? If the air condition unit is too large, there may not be any uniformity during the cooling process. In addition, the oversized air condition unit in a small room will provide cooling, but when it reaches its temperature set point, it will ‘chip out’ and go into ‘rest mode’ and then may leave the air feeling damp. When you opt for a small air condition unit in a small room, it will efficiently operate for an extended time and do more to dehumidify the room so it does not feel damp.

Conclusion

If you do have a small air conditioning unit that needs repair to operate more efficiently, you should think about contacting an experienced HVAC contractor. Of course, you will probably end up paying less for the service than you would for a large central air conditioner.
