Air handlers for heat pump systems
In a heat pump system, the air handler is the indoor unit. It holds the coil and blower, and the slot for the electric heat kit that provides backup heat. We carry more than 30 air handlers from Bosch, Goodman, Rheem, Frigidaire and Oxbox by Trane, from 1.5 to 5 tons.
Matching an air handler to your heat pump
- Refrigerant: most are built for R-454B or R-32, with a few R-410A models for existing systems. Match the outdoor unit's refrigerant.
- Capacity: match the air handler's tonnage to the heat pump.
- Fit: common cabinet widths are 17.5", 21" and 24.5". Most are multi-position (upflow, downflow or horizontal), and Bosch also offers a compact wall-mounted model.
- Blower: variable-speed and modulating blowers pair best with two-stage or inverter heat pumps for steadier comfort and better humidity control.
Backup heat: air handlers don't come with heat strips installed. Add an electric heat kit approved for the air handler model, sized for your home's heating needs.
